Following a change in privacy terms, WhatsApp users have been flocking to Telegram and Signal. The rival apps are encrypted and private messaging service providers that are are quickly gaining popularity in light of WhatsApp’s fierce controversy regarding its new terms and conditions. A “refuge” of sorts, Telegram and Signal have become reassuring beacons of privacy in a time where privacy is a luxury instead of a fundamental human right. Telegram is infamous for refusing to cooperate with authorities and hand over encryption keys, giving users confidence in private communication. End-to-end encryption and advocacy from Elon Musk adds credibility to previously little-known app, Signal.
