Can Singapore stay cool with rising temperatures?

Singapore has been experiencing soaring temperatures as high as 34 degrees Celsius in July. A major factor that causes this rising temperature is the urban heat island effect.

In recent years, there has been greater public awareness of Singapore’s perennial issue of land scarcity, and the ongoing tension between the need for urban development and the need to preserve green spaces for their environmental value.

To balance nature and urban development, Singapore is turning to science and technology to come up with strategies. The use of “cool paints” is being embarked in housing estates to bring down ambient temperatures. Common practices include orienting buildings to the north-south direction to reduce sun exposure and recovering waste heat from air-conditioners to warm indoor pools and showering facilities.

Are these mitigation strategies enough to bring temperatures down? How else can Singapore beat the heat? Find out more here.
