No more bark in Korea’s bite: South Korea bans dog meat trade
To end the practice of dog meat consumption, the South Korean government has passed a law banning the trade of dog meat.
This legislation will come into full effect by 2027. Till then, farmers, restaurant owners and others involved in the industry will have to find alternative sources of employment. The government has pledged full support for this group during this transition but has not disclosed any compensation details.
The response towards the legislation is mixed; while animal rights activists and younger Koreans welcome the change, many older Koreans have expressed frustration.
Arguments such as the freedom of choice, the importance of tradition and the inherent difficulties of switching industries were raised by consumers and producers in the dog meat trade.
