Vet Bills Haunt Us: Singapore Couple’s $60K Heartbreak

In 2018, first-time dog owners Jackie See and Judyvein Cheng purchased Wangcai, a male French bulldog, from a local backyard breeder. As a puppy, Wangcai suffered from health issues such as mites, yeast infections, and skin conditions, leading to thousands of dollars in vet bills. After spending $10,000, Wangcai’s condition improved, but with age, new problems like an enlarged prostate and joint issues emerged. He eventually required surgery for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) but tragically passed away four days post-operation.

In total, the couple spent $60,000 on his treatments. To pay off their credit card debts, they had to drain their savings and sell their HDB flat. Backyard-bred animals, though cheaper, are prone to health complications, prompting warnings from animal welfare groups and authorities against supporting such breeders.
