My Generation Took Risks, Not Videos: Man Fights 5th-Storey Fire
“But we don’t think when it comes to certain situations… My generation takes risks first…. not take videos first”. This sentiment reflects the actions of Ridwan Ash-Siddiq, the 42-year-old heroic man who climbed onto a fifth-storey ledge to help extinguish a fire at Kaki Bukit using a water hose.
The fire broke out on September 20, 2024, and Ridwan, who works at the same location, promptly responded while waiting for the arrival of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Despite the thick smoke and potential health risk, he was able to contain the fire. He shared that his main priority was keeping the fire from spreading to other units.
Ridwan, who has been working at the site for over ten years, felt compelled to help especially because others were filming the scene. Although many people questioned the risks he took, Ridwan noted that in such instances, taking action is more crucial than being concerned about dangers. He dismissed criticism and emphasised the need of helping first, rather than being cautious or passive.
The SCDF successfully extinguished the fire when they arrived. Many commended his actions, but many also highlighted the importance of striking the right balance between bravery and safety in times of crisis. His wife had no knowledge about his heroism until she saw the viral video. Ridwan later reflected on his experience, admitting that, while he acted on impulse, his primary concern was the safety of the industrial units and his coworkers.
