Trump Cast as TikTok’s Saviour Amid U.S. Ban
Following a brief shutdown due to national security concerns, TikTok’s services in the U.S. were restored after Donald Trump announced a delay to the ban, allowing more time for the app to come up with a resolution. TikTok subsequently publicly expressed gratitude to Trump, portraying him as the saviour of the platform. From initiating talks of banning the app to being celebrated for saving it, Trump’s involvement has positioned him as a central figure in TikTok’s operations in the U.S.
To mark the platform’s return, users received a pop-up message stating: “As a result of President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the US!” This message welcomed back several users who had migrated to competing platforms like Xiaohongshu. Despite the continuation of its services, this move raised questions on TikTok’s involvement with political figures and how such associations might impact its brand perception and user trust. Companies that use TikTok as a marketing platform may face impacts linked to the stigma associated with Trump’s administration, as several users of the app could switch to other platforms not associated with US politics.
While other big tech CEO’s have made donations to Trump’s inauguration, a sign of their acceptance and welcome to Trump’s office, Mr Chew has not done the same. Mark Cenite, an Associate Dean at Nanyang Technology University has warned against cozying up to Trump or political leaders, as any close associations stemming from such relationships may change as quickly as political tides turn. By maintaining neutrality, TikTok could safeguard its global appeal and ensure continued operations in the highly competitive social media landscape.
