Big Dog(e) is watching you…from The White House. Elon Musk asks US federal employees, “What did you do last week?”

On 22nd February, US federal government employees received an email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) instructing them to detail their work accomplishments from the previous week. With a deadline for submission set for 24th February, employees were threatened with termination should they fail to comply.

The controversial directive, viewed to be part of President Trump and his administration’s broader push to downsize the federal workforce, was spearheaded by the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).

The apparent head of Doge? Billionaire Elon Musk – although the Whitehouse has issued a statement that Musk, in fact, has no authority over Doge. Coming on the heels of a first wave of job cuts among federal employees, the directive has only served to heighten concerns and uncertainty.

Response to the directive has been quick. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the union representing federal workers has stated that it will challenge any “unlawful terminations”.

Some federal agencies have since requested employees not to respond, adding that they needed time to better assess the request. Meanwhile, federal employees have criticised the rationale behind the email, questioning its validity as an accurate measure of an employee’s work contributions.
