Protesters in Asia Unite Under Anime’s Most Rebellious Crew

Anti-corruption protests in Indonesia, Nepal and Philippines have recently erupted. The flag with the “Straw Hat Pirates” emblem has appeared in Nepal and Philippines as many young people, particularly Gen-Z have unified under the banner against injustice and the lack of empathy shown by their respective governments. Reality mirrors fiction where the main characters in the ‘One Piece’ anime are fighting against a corrupt world government, inspiring the masses. This movement started in Indonesia, following the innocent killing of a food delivery rider by authorities.  As Gen-Z grow up and have more authority in making decisions in Politics and nation building, we may start to see an increasing influence of Gen-Z pop-culture and media. This is corroborated where citizens in Nepal have elected their Prime Minister into office, by casting their vote on Discord, a popular gaming app.
