Boomers, not Gen-Zs, are slaying at saving the earth

Baby Boomers, the apparent generation Greta Thunberg admonishes in her famous how dare you speech, are the most environmentally-conscious age group in Singapore, according to the OCBC Climate Index 2022.

Not only did they score the highest for awareness and adoption of greener lifestyles, but they are also doing more advocacy work than their younger counterparts. Factors driving this phenomenon include the older generation’s greater resources of time and accumulated knowledge, heightened by their increased usage of digital tools.

The study found that deterrents to embracing climate action were cost, inconvenience and time. In contrast, motivators to spur sustainable habits were personal reasons such as attaining better health and more savings.

However, at the end of the day, it is not about which generation does it better. The study acknowledges that it is an effort to be undertaken by all, especially companies and policymakers who should be the forerunners in making our earth more liveable.
