The cane (colloquially known as the “rotan”): Singapore’s go-to punishment for criminals; A weapon of choice for Asian parents; A punishment that we dreaded as children.

Corporal punishment is common among Singaporean households, and this extends to Singapore’s legal system. Caning is often met out to criminals as a form of deterrence, and is notorious for the immense pain and blood that it draws. But why are Singaporeans okay with it?
