Eat Smart, Not Hard: The 80 Percent Rule to Prevent Overeating
According to Dr Edward Cheong, a senior gastrointestinal surgeon with PanAsia Surgery, many Singaporeans grew up with the value of not wasting food, partly due to cultural teachings and the historical context of food scarcity from earlier generations, which leads to overeating.
Overeating occurs when you consume food beyond the point of feeling full. It also involves continuing to eat even when you are not hungry, ignoring your body’s signal.
Dr Cheong added that a common practice is to stop eating once you are about 80 per cent full, which is determined when “eating beyond this point will lead to discomfort.”
It is advised to avoid overeating, eat slowly, stop eating when you are 80 per cent full, and give yourself 20 minutes to register fullness.
And yes, this 80 per cent includes dessert and drinks, contrary to the popular phrase “There is always room for dessert”.
