Galloping Towards Wellness: Singapore’s Seniors Saddle Up for Horse Therapy

In a heartwarming initiative, Singapore’s “Haydays with Horses” program is trotting into nursing homes, bringing miniature horses to lift seniors’ spirits. Launched by the charity Equal, in partnership with Temasek Foundation and NTUC Health, the two-year pilot aims to enhance the wellbeing of up to 800 seniors.

For participants like 77-year-old Raymond Chong, who overcame his initial apprehension to eventually developing a fondness for Chevala, a 24-year old retired polo horse, the experience is nothing short of magical. Through the program, Mr. Chong learned to interpret the horses’ moods and found joy in their companionship, stating, “It’s a once in a lifetime experience.”

Beyond the fun, such experiences have been shown to help improve motor skills, reduce stress, and spark joy, alleviating anxiety among the elderly. Research is underway to measure the program’s impact on mental health, cognition, and social engagement, with hopes of integrating equine therapy into Singapore’s eldercare system.
