Singapore Football: The Rising Sun Quickly Falls

A country that has hosted the likes of legends such as Fandi Ahmad, is now ranked 156th out of 210 countries when they were ranked 73rd in 1993. Why is there a decline? Look no further than the FAS’s mishandling of our national teams head coach. Takayuki Nishigiya’s hiring off the back of mediocre club results, over Stephen Constantine, who led India to the FIFA top 100 rankings, showed just how little football matters to Singapore where budget was a concern. Was his personality, ability to communicate and temperament considered? Or was it a simple gamble that the coach would be able to work miracles?
