In the animated and live versions of Disney’s Mulan, we see the titular character responding to the draft in her father’s place because of his age and poor health. While Mulan may have believed that her father would be sent to the frontlines and could not bear the physical burdens of war that young men are expected to carry, this fan theory suggests otherwise. According to some fans, the Chinese Army actually wanted Mulan’s father specifically because of his experience and reputation as a military veteran from the last Great War. He was never supposed to fight alongside the young men – he was destined to take on a leadership role, come up with battle tactics and help the Captain to shape the misfit unit into a platoon of proper soldiers. Hence, the Army was disappointed when the boy ‘Fa Ping’ showed up instead. Ultimately, Mulan rose to the occasion and saved China, but it is interesting to consider that the Army really did want her dad.
