Transforming VR from bulky headsets to lightweight goggles
Meta is set to release its next-generation VR headsets around 2026: the premium Quest 4 and the more affordable Quest 4S. The two-tier approach aims to offer cutting-edge performance for enthusiasts while keeping VR accessible for casual users. Both models are expected to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 3, promising faster graphics, smoother performance, and improved AI capabilities.
What stands out is the Quest 4’s design, goggle-like frame that prioritizes comfort, possibly by shifting the battery to reduce front-heavy weight. Display upgrades, including higher-resolution panels and OLED technology, along with advanced optics, aim to deliver clearer, more natural visuals.
The premium headset may also restore eye- and face-tracking, making avatars more lifelike, while foveated rendering and better mixed-reality passthrough improve immersion. Experimental inputs, like EMG armbands for gesture control, push beyond traditional controllers. With cloud gaming partnerships and accessory support, Meta’s Quest 4 line looks to combine the portability of smart glasses with the power of high-end VR.
