When ‘Romantic Homicide’ Song Turns into a Real Murder Investigation

David Anthony Burke, better known by his stage name D4vd, was riding a wave of success in the alternative R&B scene when his career was abruptly derailed by a disturbing discovery. Earlier this month, Los Angeles police confirmed that the body of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, missing since 2024, was found inside the trunk of a Tesla registered under the 20-year-old singer’s name.

Authorities reported that the remains were wrapped in plastic and in a state of decomposition when the vehicle was inspected on September 8. The Los Angeles County coroner later identified the victim as Celeste, who disappeared at the age of 13. The investigation has since expanded to a Hollywood Hills property linked to D4vd, where police seized electronics and other potential evidence.

Although officials have emphasised that Burke has not been named a suspect, the case has already had sweeping consequences. The musician has canceled his U.S. and European tour dates, halted promotion of his debut album Withered, and seen collaborators distance themselves. Fellow artist Kali Uchis announced plans to remove their joint track from streaming platforms, while online communities devoted to D4vd locked down after heated debates and accusations of censorship.

Unanswered questions remain at the heart of the case: the cause of death, the circumstances of Celeste’s disappearance, and any potential link between her and the singer. For now, the once-promising career of D4vd is overshadowed by an investigation that continues to grip both the music industry and the public.
