Why your friendly neighbourhood bloodsuckers love you

In every summer outing or relaxing walk through the park, we all have that one friend. The center feast, the sacrifice, the core contributor to the bloodfest initiated by our friendly neighbourhood mosquitoes. Over the years, there have been many amusing speculations on what constitues a top-tier mosquito charmer – be it a “sweeter” blood type or having more beautiful skin. But what does the science say about determining who the sacrificial lambs are and who escapes unscathed?

First, mosquitoes are initially drawn in by carbon dioxide as they are able to detect it as well as other human skin odorants. Hence, a study has shown that individuals with greater body mass could potentially be more attractive to mosquitoes due to their increased surface area and CO2 output.

Secondly, several studies found that indiviudals with an O blood type are deemed “tastier” by mosquitoes while conversely, those with an A blood type are found less attractive. Perhaps the original speculation of having a “sweeter” blood type may not be that baseless after all.

Lastly, several studies have identified lactic acid to be a differentiating factor in attracting mosquitoes. So while engaging in rigorous exercise, we would likely be a more attractive target as our bodies produce greater amounts of lactic acid. The best advice would be rest promptly before heading elsewhere!

But in the end, if all else fails – just sit beside that (greatly appreciated) friend of yours to shield yourself from any mosquito barrage. Minimum effort, maximum outcome!
