Zero, not hero, for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics
Since the end of 2019, China has strictly adhered to a zero-Covid tolerance policy toward the corona virus pandemic. As the country’s capital Beijing prepares to host the Olympics Winter Games scheduled for February 4 to 20, the municipal government has sealed up its “bubble” on January 4, where thousands of Games-related participants, drivers, cooks, cleaners and volunteers will have no direct physical contact with the outside world. The local residents have also been warned not to rush to help any Winter Olympics vehicle should it crash.
Helping others in need have been traditional values upheld by the Chinese culture and promoted through media in the form of martial art hero movies or comics. However, to achieve zero-Covid target, Beijing has given a new meaning to helping others by having individuals “maintaining a safe distance” from victims to minimize infection. In the case of “traffic accidents with special vehicles for the Winter Olympics”, locals have been urged not to make contact with the vehicles or personnel involved but “wait for professionals to arrive at the scene”.
